custom earplugs... so you can hear and enjoy music today and tomorrow!!

Rock Stars II™ so that you can hear and enjoy music today and tomorrow. Rock Stars II™ are custom-made sound suppressers that can help protect the hearing of musicians, support staff and concert attendees when they have sustained exposure to very loud music. Rock Stars II™ can be fit with filtered Continuous Flow Adapters (CFA™) which enable the user to match frequency-specific attenuation levels to the spectral characteristics of the music. Music is sufficiently attenuated to help prevent hearing loss. While music heard through Rock Stars II is suppressed, it will retain its clarity, depth, and brilliance. Background sustained exposure to noise levels above 80 dB can cause a hearing loss. The hearing of musicians, their support staff, orchestra conductors, band leaders or teachers, and frequent rock concert attendees is at risk. Hearing protection often does not become a concern until a person senses some loss in hearing acuity.

Rock music has been measured at sound levels as high as 100 to 140 dB. This is a extremely high noise level. The sound levels of college school bands have been measured at well over 100 dB. The challenge is not only to educate at risk populations to the effects of excessive noise exposure, but to motivate them to use ear protection.

The prevention of hearing impairment is the primary goal of the hearing health professional working with musicians or concert attendees. However, to ensure the use of ear protection, the product must attenuate music without distorting or changing the sound of the music.
Advantages of Custom Ear Plugs.

Rock Stars II™ are custom-made sound suppressers which provide users with unparalleled comfort for short or extended periods of time.

Proper Insertion:

Rock Stars II™ custom ear plugs are easy to insert. Proper insertion is essential to maximize attenuation. Field studies have revealed that plastic or foam plugs are often inserted improperly and therefore provide less than published mean attenuation levels. All ear plugs are marked by an inconspicuous dot to indicate left and right ear.

Consistent Performance:

Because of their molded design custom ear plugs provide consistent performance over time. Each time a custom plus is inserted the same mean attenuation is attainable. Foam plugs rapidly lose their attenuation strength as they are exposed to ear wax, dirt, and the natural oil on hands.

Superior Value:

Rock Stars II™ have an expected life span of three (3) years. Used just ten (10) times a year their cost per use is less than the foam plugs bought in pharmacies or music stores.

Advantages of Rock Stars II™

Performance:

Rock Stars II™ have a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 28 based on testing by an independent laboratory. This is the highest custom ear protection rating on today's market.

Custom Filtering System:

mvc-006f.jpg (51061 bytes)

The unique design of Rock Stars II™ is created by the use of filtered Continuous Flow Adapters (CFA). This filtering system enables the client and their dispenser to control and shape the attenuation of music so that the loudness is sufficiently limited and the music sounds clear, undistorted, and full-bodied. This is important as the most common complaint voiced by users of alternative plugs is the loss of clarity and distortion of the music. The mean (average) level of attenuation can be as low as 10 dB or as high as 30 dB.

The sound quality heard through sound suppressers should be softer in terms of intensity. The music should sound clear and full-bodied - not distorted by a treble or bass emphasis. Rock Stars II™ are designed to control this situation.

Easy Replacement:

Rock Stars II™ can easily be replaced because of the unique manufacturing process used by Pacific Coast Laboratories whereby a cast is maintained for a period of three (3) years.
Rock Stars II™ can help attenuate music when it reaches loud and potentially harmful levels without distorting or changing the sound of the music.

Methods & Strategies

Baseline Audiometric Data:

It is recommended that the hearing acuity of the prospective Rock Stars II™ user be tested. It is important to establish if you have normal hearing or a pre-existing hearing loss.
What levels of attenuation can you expect from Rock Star I & Rock Stars II?
It is important to know the average (mean) level of sound attenuation which will occur when Rock Stars II™ are worn at concerts by musicians and concert attendees.

The attenuation achieved at specific frequencies is shown for various Rock Stars I™ and Rock Stars II™ configurations (refer to the above data). The filter used is noted on the left of the chart. The greatest differences in attenuation occur below 1000Hz. Spectral analysis of heavy metal, rock, rhythm and blues, jazz, big band, country western, and classical orchestral music indicate that some of the greatest differences in music's spectral characteristics occur below 1000 Hz.

An independent laboratory has tested Rock Stars I™ and Rock Stars II™. The level of attenuation was measured at nine frequencies. The test data for the ear plugs is shown in the chart above.

The most suppression or attenuation occurs with Rock Stars I™, a solid ear plug. The least suppression or attenuation occurs when a 680 filtered CFA is used with the Rock Stars II™. When filters are changed the attenuation at specific frequencies is altered. To measure the attenuation Rock Stars II™ are providing a specific client, use a real ear measurement system and follow manufacture's instructions for attenuation measurements.

To measure how Rock Stars II™ attenuate music, you need a continuous real time system with a spectrum test mode that can process external signals and test all frequencies simultaneously (i.e. Frye Electronics FONIX 6500).
